Dear Mr. President...

By all means, I would positively support Christopher Hitchens's advocacy for adopting a forward and candid looking approach of the Bush administration towards the Iranian nuclear program. Diplomacy of threat, coercion or brinkmanship, surely would make the conflict more complex and twisted which would not be of any praiseworthy initiative regarding the solution of this conflict. The Iranians are much educated nation than that of any other Muslim nation in the middle east. The Iraniains' academic outlook is not extreme or obstinate. Washington's methodology regarding the Iranians must be based on the ground realities entailed in the Mideast region. Therefore, a liberal, and accommodating American diplomacy, would generate positive results than that of the hardliners' policy dictates.

to pick just one item from mr. hitchens' laundry list: "the ghastliest penal system" - what if in fact it is that in the u.s. which incarcerates a far greater number and percentag of people per capita than any country in the world. franz angst, m.d.
