Prophets and Poseurs: Niebuhr and Our Times

As pastor, teacher, activist, moral theologian, and prolific author, Reinhold Niebuhr was a towering presence in American intellectual life from the 1930s through the 1960s. He was, at various points in his career, a Christian Socialist, a pacifist, an advocate of U.S. intervention in World War II, a staunch anti-Communist, an architect of Cold War liberalism, and a sharp critic of the Vietnam War.

In this piece, Andrew J.Bacevich has correctly anatomised the causes of waning American power in the world, the diminishing American image and the paradoxes of American foreign policy.Refering and recalling the prophetic vision of late Niebuhr, he seems to have rightly traced the historical investigation through which the American policy makers seem to have been orchestrating the most euphoric policy lines that have paved the way for political and economic sun down of the American empire.

ANDREW BACEVICH HAS EARNED OUR EAR Only rarely does someone surface with qualifications as well as insights and a delivery that stimulate thinking. Even more rarely does an individual stimulate the very personal mental articulation of self observation. Bacevich deserves as broad an audience as can be exposed to his thoughtful analysis.
