James Denton is the publisher and editor of World Affairs and Demokratizatsiya, and the director of World Affairs Institute in Washington, D.C. Prior to joining Heldref, Denton was the director of Freedom House, founded in 1941 by Eleanor Roosevelt and Wendell Willkie to promote freedom worldwide. In a consulting capacity, he represented Lech Walesa and Prime Ministers Viktor Orban of Hungary and Zoran Djindjic of Serbia; he also consulted to the OSCE, the National Democratic Institute, ABC News, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and the Folger Shakespeare Library. Denton is the recipient of awards and commendations from the President of Romania and the Prime Minister of Poland for his support of the region’s democratic transition, as well as from the Democratic Opposition of Serbia for his support of its effort to overthrow Slobodan Milosevic.

Denton oversaw the development of the $20 million America at a Crossroads initiative, a 20-hour PBS documentary series that explores the challenges and opportunities America faces in the wake of the September 11 attacks. Crossroads was public television's most-watched series in 2007. Denton served as a Communications and Anti-Submarine warfare officer on a U.S. Navy warship beginning in 1974.
