Andrew Bacevich: Anti-ImperialistAndrew Bacevich on international relations and foreign policy. Title: More Than Peanut Butter
Keywords:
Here is the way that U.S. military officers describe their purpose in Year Nine of the Long War: “Our goal is to take care of the people, not kill the Taliban.” The speaker is Captain Ryan Sparks, commander of the Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, currently engaged in operations that aim to deliver good governance to the people of Afghanistan’s Helmand Province. mindy bricker

This Wilsonian moral imperialism is still imperialism, wherein the United States exhanges food for influence and sooner or later ends up attempting to create a government against which the people ultimately rebel-- at which time the marines are sent back with weapons to support that government. America should just send the food and equipment and leave the rest to the U.N.

The selective amnesia of
the United States along with
the blissfull and profound
ignorance of the world behond
it's own borders is entirely
symptomatic of the Hubris
that bred this empire and exeptionalism.
How much longer it can be sustained is the 14.3 trillion dollar question.

The Romans and British rationaized their empires as civilizational projects, enlightening an otherwise benighted world. Perhaps in some respects they were correct but their ambitions inevitably led to their bankruptcy and collapse. We Americans are no exception. Whatever 'good works' come from empire are eclipsed by its costs, both moral and material. Come home America and once again be a sensible commercial republic.

to Andrew Bacevich:
a profound 'thank you' for continuing to speak out on behalf of a principled and honorable America.
That this 'position' is not instantly recognized as the true patriot's..is an indication of how a-historical our culture has become.
Please continue your courageous efforts...

We are a benevolent empire, and Dick Cheney is a Sports Illustrated swimsuit model. Anyone who believes otherwise is obviously a self-hating shrew.

Oh yes, please , let us continue to facilitate the flow of peanut butter to Haiti- to hungry people around the planet but let us imagine too how this peanut butter - and surgery for a few - might be accompanied by housing and health care and sustainable production and agriculture for all if we could offer it disentangled from a war machine that leaves us with such a pittance to give as it swallows resources whole to feed itself. Ah my mathematical abilities are staggered as I try to calculate how many jars of peanut butter might be had for one year of a defense budget transformed. Let us truly opt for butter over guns!

The two posts above this tell me you ain't moderating this page very intensively. (Editors Note: the two posts you are referencing have been removed). But anyway, for what it's worth: nuts. Don't mistake the haverings of public relations consultants and their allies for sensible comment.
And if you accept the Gerson comments as mere self-serving nonsense you also have to accept the possibility that the US presence in Haiti, at THIS moment, not during their rule in the 1920s, is indeed both necessary and basically benevolent. Where it comes from, historically, may not be: where it's going may not be, but right now if I was a Haitian staring at the bodies of my parents and the ruins of my house and some Marine camne up and handed me a ration pack and a bottle of water I'd thank him. And so, if you had something in your head beyond mere cleverness, should you.

My dear late grandfather was one of those Marines in the 1920s tending Haiti. I always wondered why I never saw him eat a peanut butter sandwich in my life.

May be, I am naive. But, I would rather have U.S. Army distribute peanut butter in Haiti than commit genocide in Iraq and Afghanistan. Remember, it is easy to forget about bad peanut butter distribution than genocide. Genocide could lead to bloodier revenge.

I fail to see how distributing food to starving Haitian earthquake victims constitutes a "latter-day version of imperialism." The devastation caused by the quake is real, not a pretext for entering the country. As Haiti's close,
wealthy neighbor, it would be
despicable not to provide aid. Nor do
I see the special relevance of our
presence in Haiti a lifetime ago to
accounts of today's humanitarian
mission. It is true that we ended up
doing much good in Haiti between
1915 and 1934 after occupying the
country for admitedly imperialistic
reasons, building roads, bridges,
irrigation canals, schools and
hospitals, bringing drinking water to
cities and inroducting profitable new
crops. These activities greatly improved Haiti's infrastructure, but were done to augment our presence there, expel German influence and make the country more servicable our needs. By contrast, today's aid to Haiti is purely humanitarian--
unless you are cynical enough to believe that feeding starving earthquake victims is inherently a form of imperialistic control. If so, no powerful country can provide disaster aid to another nation without
facing such charges. Remember: We did not cause the Haitian earthquake; we simply responded to it. Had we wished to occupy Haiti for imperialistic reasons we could have done so without waiting for a natural disaster--just as we have done in the past.

I could blame the MSM, save for the claim they only give people what they want. It seems to work, a 'feel good' story here and there for the American sensitivities.
The news on the ground in Haiti reveals rather a different picture. And no, it wasn't "we" (Americans) but many people and other countries who responded quickly. Too much so, it seems, for the military. A French aid plane was turned away because of military priorities.
And ask Haitians how they felt digging bodies out of the rubble on their own as troops with rifles sauntered around maintaining 'security'.
But yes, there were some American heroes, like one private aid group trucking overland in the first few days to deliver food and water and medical supplies. I dare say the MSM never covered their story. But they're not US government sponsored and they pay their own way -- that's true humanitarianism. Without rifles.
