David Rieff: The Road to Hell is PavedDavid Rieff on international affairs. Title: Gott Mit Uns

Blake said of Milton that the author of Paradise Lost “was a true poet, and of the Devil’s party without knowing it.” While in those precincts of the American Right where the wild id roams free, Barack Obama increasingly is viewed as the devil incarnate. But even in the calmer regions of American conservatism, a view of the president startlingly analogous to Blake’s of Milton holds sway. “We do not question the sincerity of his, or their [e.g. American liberals] desire to better the lot of his countrymen,” write the National Review’s editor-in-chief, Richard Lowry, and the conservative columnist and anti-abortion activist, Ramesh Ponnuru. “But modern liberal intellectuals have a notoriously difficult time coming up with a decent account of patriotism even when they have felt it. From Richard Rorty to Todd Gitlin, they have proclaimed their allegiance to a hypothetical, pure country that is coming into being rather than to the one they inhabit.” mindy bricker

You are suggesting/predicting that an assassination is inevitable?

Inevitable? Absolutely not, not least because I have enormous respect for the Secret Service. But what I am suggesting is that the kind of rhetoric that is now commonplace on the Right --- and what I see as its ubiquity is for me the key point --- is creating an atmosphere similar to the one that existed prior to the Kennedy assassination. That seems to me cause for great alarm, but, again, certainly not resignation

It's a funny kind of fanatically interventionist armed patriotism that chooses Dr Ron Paul as the next Republican presidential nominee. That was the big news at CPAC: freedom-loving youngsters, picking up the mess of the past 70 years, who have seen through the military industrial complex, the Israel Lobby and every other critter who tries to embroil the USA (to its own ruin) in the business of other countries. The tide is turning back to keeping our own house in order and letting the rest of the world be. Shills for war, take note.

So, when The New Republic wistfully dreams of the days of John Wilke-Booth and Hinckley, when a Toronto film festival gives an award to a film calling for the assassination of Mr. Bush and when "protests" and "protesters" routinely caricature Mr. Bush as Hitler or a murderer...that is not the "rhetoric of the Left?"
Funny, I don't remember all of the gnashing of teeth the soul-searching when it was liberals actually calling for the assassination of a sitting president.
You libs are all in a tizzy because the man Newsweek annointed as God and the man a slobbering media assured us was very bright, has turned out to be corrupt as hell and a dunce.
Stop misdirecting and changing the subject and defend this effete narcissist you fell in love with.

Watching it from Spain, it does not look worse than the arguments and adjectives used about, and mainly against, Bush.
Is it so bad or maybe it is just your sensibility sharper for Obama?
